What is Biblically Based Counseling?
By Jerry M. Ireland, PhD
Biblical counseling is grounded in the reality that all people are created in God’s image (Gen. 1:26-27) and therefore can only experience true healing and wholeness (shalom) when reconciled with Him and with others. Biblical counseling seeks to draw on God’s wisdom and sovereign power in leading people back to God’s design for their lives by helping them to overcome the destructive effects of sin and of Satan, who “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Biblical counseling constitutes an essential element in overcoming addiction and life-controlling issues because it grounds healing and wholeness in a biblical worldview; as such Christian counseling is distinct from secular counseling in that it specifically incorporates the spiritual dimension, biblical truths, and a seeking of God’s will in an individual’s life. Often secular counseling does not acknowledge the imago Dei nor recognize the impact of sin and its effects.
We also recognize the value of theologically and spiritually grounded believers who have responded to the call of God to advance their knowledge and skills, devoting themselves to the study of expertise in the area of the emotional, spiritual, relational, and psychological needs of those we serve and are pursuing licensure. This centers on the belief that ATC should offer the highest quality of care to its clients. To this end the gifting of those Christian counselors pursuing or having acquired licensure – whom God may call to serve within our ranks, aligns with the ATC mission, vision, and values. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone” (1 Cor. 12:4-6).
